Former Child Star Rory Callum Sykes Killed In L.A. Fires After His Mom Tried to Save Him

Amid the Los Angeles wildfires, Rory Callum Sykes—a child actor born blind and with cerebral palsy—died at age 32 after mom Shelley Sykes was unable to contact 911 and put out the fire herself.

The Los Angeles wildfires continue to cause devastation across California.

Shelley and her son Rory

Rory was known for hosting the British RTV show Kiddy Kapers back in 1998. Born blind and diagnosed with cerebral palsy, Rory's mother had previously spoken about how he had "overcome so much" in his life, including "therapies to regain his sight and to be able to learn how to walk"

Shelley Sykes, in a moving tribute to her son after his tragic death, wroteon Twitter/X, "It is with great sadness that I have to announce the death of my beautiful son @Rorysykes to the Malibu fires yesterday. I'm totally heart broken. British born Australian living in America, a wonderful son, a gift born on mine and his grandmas birthday 29 July 92, Rory Callum Sykes."

She ended her heartfelt message with, "He will be incredibly missed by @shelleysykes, mama his pet peacocks Edgee and Mickie and all his online fans around the world!" In response to Shelley's post, fans and followers expressed their condolences. One user commented, "RIP @rorysykes. May God give you and family the strength to bear the great loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you."

Another shared their sympathy, saying, "I'm so sorry to read this news. What a traumatic experience for both of you. Sending my condolences," and another shared, "It's heartbreaking and devastating....if the water had been turned on the fire fighters may have had a chance, he may well still be here."
