"It was like the apocalypse. The flames engulfed the hotel immediately, like in half an hour," witness Mevlut Ozer told Reuters.
"I would like to share this pain, which is impossible to describe," Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said. "Since the back of the hotel is on a slope, fire extinguishing efforts could only be carried out from the front and side facades.
Four people, including the owner of the hotel, have been detained by authorities as a part of the investigation, Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said in a post on X.
Kartalkaya Ski Resort is among the most popular ski resorts in Turkey. There are 23 trails, and the summit sits above 3,700 feet.
The hotel was built onto a cliff, which made it difficult for those fighting the fire to extinguish the flames. Emergency crews arrived nearly an hour after the flames began. At least 30 fire trucks and 28 ambuances arrived on the scene, and guests at nearby hotels were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
