In a thrilling encounter that showcased his legendary prowess, Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic triumphed over Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz to secure his place in the semifinals of the Australian Open. Djokovic, who boasts a remarkable 10 titles at this prestigious tournament, claimed victory with a scoreline of 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and 6-4 after a grueling 3 hours and 37 minutes on court.
Djokovic faced an uphill battle from the onset, dropping his serve twice in the first set, capitulating to Alcaraz who seized the opportunity to take a 6-4 lead. Compounding his struggles, Djokovic called for medical assistance before the final game, indicating discomfort in his groin as concerns mounted about the physical condition of the nearly 38-year-old champion.
However, the 24-time Grand Slam winner regrouped and adjusted his strategy in the second set, aiming to shorten the rallies to alleviate his discomfort. With sharp shot-making and an Alcaraz struggling to find his rhythm, Djokovic shifted the momentum, capturing the second and third sets 6-4 and 6-3, respectively.
Djokovic struck decisively at the start of the fourth set, securing an early break of serve. Although Alcaraz had chances to bounce back, Djokovic's performance remained near flawless during crucial moments, allowing him to hold serve and clinch the match with a final set of 6-4.
This victory marked Djokovic's fifth win over Alcaraz in their head-to-head encounters, leaving the young Spaniard still seeking his first Australian Open title. The only Grand Slam that has eluded Alcaraz thus far, he has yet to reach the semifinals in Melbourne, though at just 21 years old, time is on his side.
Next up for Djokovic in the semifinals is Germany's Alexander Zverev, the world’s second-ranked player, who also advanced through a four-set battle against American Tommy Paul.
