Nashville police and schools are monitoring social media discussion and concerns Thursday as people speculate if additional schools could be targeted after a 17-year-old student opened fire Wednesday at Antioch High School, killing himself and a 16-year-old girl while injuring another, officials said.
Solomon Henderson shot and killed 16-year-old Josselin Corea Escalante in the high school cafeteria just after 11 a.m. before he turned the gun on himself, police said.
Another student suffered a graze wound during the shooting and was treated and later released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, police said Wednesday. A fourth student fell and suffered a facial injury, requiring medical attention, but he was not directly hurt by the gunfire, police noted.
Antioch High School shooting:Everything to know after gun violence hits Nashville community again
Metro Nashville Public Schools spokesperson Sean Braisted said Thursday morning the district had a police presence at all schools as part of its typical school safety initiative, but more resources had been added.
“Police have added additional presence to some schools based on social media rumors or threats circulating online. Those threats have not been substantiated, but we are providing additional security out of an abundance of caution,” Braisted said.
Antioch High School is closed Thursday and Friday.
There were no reports of schools on lockdown as of Thursday morning.
“We are aware of those social media posts as any other (potential threats),” Nashville police spokesperson Brooke Reese said.
Police established a school Safety Division in August 2022 after the shooting at The Covenant School to enhance safety of students and teachers. Safety team members rotate each school day along with training at different schools and go to schools according to need, Reese said.
