47th President Donald Trump’s inauguration

IMPERIAL COUNTY — As Donald J. Trump prepares to take the oath of office as 47th President of the United States, residents and political organizations in Imperial County share their reactions to his return to the White House.

Once President Trump recites the following words, he will officially assume the presidency: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will do the best of my ability to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

President Trump is expected to outline his administration’s goals for the next four years during his inaugural address.

Republicans celebrate a historic flip

For the first time in 36 years, Imperial County voted Republican in a presidential election, a victory that has energized local conservatives. Sayrs Morris, Chairwoman of the Imperial County Republican Central Committee expressed optimism about the future.

In a statement to Imperial Valley Press, Morris said, ”Imperial County Republicans are thrilled to welcome President Donald J. Trump to his second term in office. The hardworking people of Imperial County have felt the devastation of Democrats’ policies firsthand and sent a clear mandate to President Trump to bring back prosperity, security, and common sense.”

Morris encouraged voters, volunteers, and members to visit their Facebook page or go to IVGOP.com for more information.

Democrats call for reflection and renewal

Bryan Vega, the newly elected Chair of the Imperial County Democratic Party acknowledged the challenges facing his party.

“Donald Trump's victory in November represents a clear rejection of the establishment democrats’ business-as-usual approach to politics and governing,” Vega said in a statement to the Imperial Valley Press. Pointing out the results on election night, Vega continued, “Democrats at the national level failed to deliver results for everyday, working Americans at the speed and scale they deserved.”

Reflecting on the recovery of the party he stated, “The Democrat Party, as a whole, must go beyond soul-searching; it must re-center the basic needs of the people in its policies.”

Vega cautioned, “Trump’s second term will undoubtedly have a profound impact on Imperial County. From policies affecting our agricultural workforce to binational trade with Mexico and the development of Lithium Valley, the stakes are high.”

Vega promised to meet the challenges that he sees and “hold the incoming Trump administration accountable for its promises.”

Community voices express concern

Los Amigos de la Comunidad INC., an organization that provides services and resources for underserved communities, shared a more critical view of the incoming administration, raising concerns about potential impacts on marginalized communities.

CEO Eric Reyes told the Imperial Valley Press, “The inauguration of a polarizing politician to the highest position in the United States reminds us of our fractured past of legal divisions by race overcome by generations of civil rights activism and laws that broke down once-legal divisions.”

As a civil rights advocate, immigrants’ rights advocate, and environmental justice advocate, Reyes expressed his deep concern about the direction of the nation, citing fears of extremism, disregard for democratic processes, and policies favoring the wealthy over the working class.

"I am apprehensive and extremely worried of the course of our nation under an extremist who has no boundaries and delusion of grandeur who does not respect the democratic process of our nation and who believes that any means justify the ends of his ideals of supporting the Uber rich over the common working person,” he stated.

While politicians come and go, we remain committed to empowering residents to reverse the economic injustices that impoverish our families, the public health inequalities that sicken our bodies, and the environmental pollution that poisons our air and water.

Imperial Valley Equity And Justice, founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, and aims to advocate for "equitable and accessible response" to health and economic impacts, shared their thoughts with Imperial Valley Press, stating, "While politicians come and go, we remain committed to empowering residents to reverse the economic injustices that impoverish our families, the public health inequalities that sicken our bodies, and the environmental pollution that poisons our air and water."

Congressman Raul Ruiz shares safety tips

California congressman Dr. Raul Ruiz sent out a statement asking for donations. The email read, "In his first term, we bore witness to his unabashed attacks on our democracy, our constitutional freedoms, and the values of equality and opportunity we hold dear. Now, we’re bracing for even more. With a cabinet of MAGA loyalists eager to push his far-right agenda and a Republican-controlled Congress on top of it, we’re going to need to work twice as hard this time around if we want to defend the great progress we’ve made."

Ruiz also warned Californians planning to make the trip to Washington D.C. of the freezing temperatures. In a video posted on X, Ruiz said, ”A lot of us who are from the desert are going to really freeze.” he advised attendees to dress in layers, and to wear a hat, gloves, scarf, and waterproof winter coat.

“Here’s a pro tip,” he added. “Bring some hand warmers.”

The event has been moved indoors due to the weather.

President Trump took to Truth Social posting, “I have ordered the Inauguration Address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the United States Capitol Rotunda, as was used by Ronald Reagan in 1985, also because of very cold weather.”

The President stated that the Capitol One Arena will be opened for a live viewing of the event and that he will join the crowd there, following his swearing in.

"Due to inclement weather, the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies will be held inside the U.S. Capitol, and the majority of ticketed guests will not be able to attend in person," Congressman Ruiz shared on Twitter. "All tickets distributed through my office are now considered commemorative, and ticket pickup hours have been communicated to ticketed guests."

Inaugural performances

The inauguration will feature performances from a lineup of, mostly country artists. Carrie Underwood will perform “America The Beautiful", followed by Kid Rock, Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, Gavin DeGraw, and Billy Ray Cyrus. Lee Greenwood will reportedly perform his song “God Bless The USA.”
